I’m sorry for starting with a grumpy old man Bit. I promise there will be very few grumpy Bits, I just had to get this one off my chest 🙂
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve encountered someone who sends me a message (or, if we’re talking pre-pandemic, walks up to my desk) at work and just starts talking about something that I am (or they are) working on. My response is always the same. I wait until they finish talking and say….
“Ok. First of all… Who are you?”
Yep, I have actually had to say that, more than once.
Let’s just say you’re starting a new job or you’re at a large company where there are hundreds (or thousands) of employees you haven’t met. Now you need to interact with someone you don’t know. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS SANE… INTRODUCE YOURSELF!!! Tell me who you are. What you do. What your department or team is… say something introductory!
So now, let me introduce myself.
